Why I Decided to Redesign My Patreon Website

There comes a time in every website's life cycle where it could use a fresh coat of paint and possibly a shift in focus as to what's most important for the user. This could not have been more true for my Patreon website, which just launched earlier this year. I knew from the beginning that version 1.0 of the website was going to be a little rough in spots. After all, this was my first time creating a website focused solely around my Patreon campaign. It was new territory for me.

Fast-forward five months later and it was time for a change. The website was beginning to feel overly crowded and the layout lacked creativity in direction. So, what's new? And more importantly, why?

Exclusive vlogs are everything

Going to my new Patreon website, you will notice right away that users can conveniently access the newest exclusive vlogs from the homepage. I decided to go this direction because the vlogs are what seem to draw the most attention to my Patreon campaign. When I announced the vlogs a while back, I had no idea the kind of impact they would have.

Because of the vlogs' popularity, I naturally made the decision to feature them in the forefront. This decision alone will hopefully entice new patrons to jump onboard and begin enjoying the exclusive content that I publish weekly.

Grid all the things

Organization of content is always a top priority for me, which is why I decided to keep the grid in mind when coming up with a new layout. Most of the content is now organized in a grid-like fashion, which definitely plays well with responsiveness — particularly when browsing the website on mobile.

Creating around the grid has also allowed me to completely rethink the Patrons Showcase. Patrons' links of choice are now tightly constrained, allowing for more information to be displayed in and around a particular content module.

Patreon changed, so I also changed

Not too long ago, Patreon decided to completely rebrand their logo, colors, etc. Learn more here. My initial reaction wasn't exactly the most positive, but like anything in the world, I learned to accept the change and move on with life. And now? Well, I like it a lot — particularly the colors.

Of course, such a change called for refinements on my end. With Patreon's new brand guidelines in mind, I had to rethink the color scheme and how to best use it. Browsing the website, you should get a nice feel of the colors that are used throughout.

And finally, call-to-action

This change required me to upgrade my Squarespace hosting, but I am hoping the expense is worth it in the end. Once a user has been on the new Patreon website for a specific amount of time, a small pop-up banner will appear towards the bottom. The banner simply promotes the benefits of becoming a patron, all while not getting in the way.

At the time of this writing, the banner mentions the exclusive vlogs. But of course, this can be changed to anything in the future. Having the flexility to adjust it over time is certainly nice.

And there you have it. My new Patreon website is officially live. Please feel free to explore and find anything that may require feedback. You are always free to contact me here.

A huge thank-you goes out to all the patrons who make this possible!

Patreon Update: December 2016

Welcome to my Patreon Update for December 2016. This is my monthly report of how my Patreon campaign is performing, as well as my chance to thank everyone for their ongoing support.

As always, let's get started with last month's earnings. Below you can see my transparency report regarding all the pledges that were received and processed for November.

November 2016 Earnings

Wow! Would you look at those numbers below? November was an incredible month for my Patreon campaign:

  • Pledged: $3,363.00
  • Service Fees: $390.27
  • Processed: $2,972.73

Updates

With the holidays right around the corner, I am constantly reminded of how truly fortunate I am to be able to create and share videos with so many people on such a grand scale. It really is an amazing opportunity, and I couldn't be more thankful. This is especially true if you look at the kind of support my Patreon campaign has been receiving for the past several months. And to think how far it's come since the beginning... Well, it's just awe-inspiring.

So, why the sudden drastic increase in earnings? I think it's safe to assume that the holidays have something to do with it. After all, I have been promising all $5+ patrons early access to my holiday videos — and I have yet to fail them. "Thanksgiving 2016" and "Black Friday 2016" were both accessible by patrons days before public release.

As you can probably tell, I take a lot of pride in getting my content out as fast as I possibly can. It's my way of coming through for those who go above and beyond by pledging monthly. And it's going to be no different with my "Christmas 2016" series. Christmas Day is on a Sunday this year, which means I'm going to try my best to get all three parts finished and uploaded for patrons by Tuesday. If that doesn't work, then definitely Wednesday.

In regards to public release, "Christmas 2016" will be published for everyone on Sunday, January 1st. This gives patrons plenty of time to enjoy their early access, as well as a few days  for me to take off and enjoy some relaxation with the family.

With all that said, I'm excited to see what 2017 brings. I already have some big plans in mind, which I will talk about in future weekend vlogs. But for now, let's focus on the holidays and enjoy them while we can.

Patreon Update: November 2016

Welcome to my Patreon Update for November 2016. This is my monthly report of how my Patreon campaign is performing, as well as my chance to thank everyone for their ongoing support.

Updates

Wow. That's what I keep thinking every time I glance at the performance of my Patreon campaign. Things have really started to take off since last month. Is it because I recently moved into a new house and patrons are curious about what goes on during the week in the exclusive vlogs? Or perhaps the community is feeling generous because the holidays are quickly approaching.

Whatever the case may be, please know that I greatly appreciate the overwhelming amount of support. I mean, just take a look at the above bar graph. I can't wait to see the final numbers for November. This is simply incredible! But okay, let's get down to business. What's in it for patrons in the coming weeks?

Well, it's November, and that can only mean one thing. It's time for Thanksgiving! And just like last year, patrons will get early access to my annual Thanksgiving video series. I'm going to try my best to get all three parts of "Thanksgiving 2016" up for viewing by that Saturday — a full 48 hours before they go public on YouTube.

And as for Black Friday? Well, I can't guarantee a series this year, but I am certainly going to try to make it happen. Regardless, patrons will still get first access to all my holiday videos, including "Christmas 2016" and even my annual birthday video.

So, what else has been happening? Ah, yes — I bought myself a little something called the Canon 80D, made entirely possible by my Patreon campaign. If you haven't seen it yet, check out my unboxing below. It's an amazing camera that will definitely last me for years.

September 2016 Earnings

Continuing with last month's increase in earnings, my Patreon campaign is once again on the rise. For those curious, below are some numbers:

Updates

I think it's pretty safe to assume that bringing back the patrons-only vlogs is the primary reason why my Patreon campaign is once again seeing month-to-month improvements in performance. Earnings continue to increase incrementally and patrons overall seem happy with the rewards they are receiving in return for their monthly pledges.

Of course, this doesn't mean that I am suddenly going to become lazy. In fact, I have some exciting plans in store for the future of my Patreon campaign — plans that I will share when they are finalized. Until then, let's talk about what will be happening throughout the next few weeks.

It's no secret that I am moving to Strasburg, Pennsylvania by the end of this month. I'm very excited to take on the next chapter in my life. It's going to be nice to have a change in scenery, especially in regards to exploring new opportunities with my work. And that includes the patrons-only vlogs!

Any patrons who pledge at least $5/month will get access to my exclusive vlogs, which will include plenty of content related to my big move. This is in addition to the 80 or so vlogs that are already accessible via Patreon. A new vlog is uploaded every Friday, so be sure to install the official Patreon app (iOS, Android) on your phone and enable notifications. You'll be notified the instant a new vlog is uploaded.

And finally, there is one more thing I want to mention. Patrons who pledge at least $5 will also get early access to all my upcoming holiday videos. That includes "Thanksgiving 2016," "Christmas 2016," and anything else holiday related that is uploaded between now and New Year's Day. In other words, if you've been thinking about becoming a patron, now is the best time to do just that! I promise, you will not be disappointed.

Patreon Update: September 2016

Welcome to my Patreon Update for September 2016. This is my monthly report of how my Patreon campaign is performing, as well as my chance to thank everyone for their ongoing support.

As always, let's get started with last month's earnings. Below you can see my transparency report regarding all the pledges that were received and processed for August.

August 2016 Earnings

My latest earnings report, thankfully, has seen a slight increase. This is in response to some positive changes that I've recently made in regards to my video content. Below are some numbers:

Updates

Last month's Patreon Update was certainly rough. The introduction of daily vlogs, while fun for thousands of my viewers, ended up having a serious impact on the performance of my Patreon campaign. Taking away exclusive vlogs for one month and shifting most of my focus toward putting out videos daily was a lesson worth learning. It actually taught me something I already knew to be true... People enjoy exclusivity. I even mentioned that in this post on Di Franco University.

Moving forward, and now that September is here (who's excited for Christmas?), I have once again returned to my traditional routine of video content. This includes releasing an exclusive vlog every Friday, each typically ranging 45–60 minutes in length. And you know what? I'm already seeing a positive effect. Despite what the chart may show above, my amount in pledges has increased by about $100 in just two weeks.

One thing I am taking away from the daily vlogs is how useful end cards can be. Before August, I never really took advantage of them. But now that I've seen the effect they can have, all my future videos will have an end card that will be used to promote my Patreon campaign. After all, every pledge counts, right? This is especially true with the holidays quickly approaching. I'll talk about that in further detail next month.

So, I suppose all I have to say is... Welcome back! If you ended up re-pledging once the exclusive vlogs made their return, just know that I appreciate your support. And if you never went anywhere to begin with, the same amount of appreciation applies. As always, you can check out all 70+ exclusive vlogs right here on my Patreon feed.
